March 28, 2005 - The Regional Emergency Medical Services Agency (REMSA) and Nevada Hispanic Services will hold a child safety seat inspection checkpoint at Miguel Ribera Park, 3905 Neil Road, Reno, starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 16, 2005. Only 30 cars can be inspected at the checkpoint. Early arrival is recommended. The event will be conducted by Nationally Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians and volunteers. Car crashes are the number one cause of death for all children, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Additionally, a recent survey showed that 42 percent of minority children (which included Hispanics) were at greater risk of air bag-related injuries because they were more frequently placed in the front seat of vehicles with front passenger air bags. By comparison, 15 percent of white children were improperly placed in the front seat of these vehicles. Seats will be checked to ensure that they are properly installed in the correct area of the vehicle, are the appropriate seat for the age and weight of the child, and that the seat does not appear on any recall list. More than 90% of cars inspected at checkpoints arrive with seats improperly installed.
