Washoe County SAFE KIDS Coalition, led by REMSA, will hold a Buckle Up child safety seat inspection at Lowe’s Home Improvement Warehouse, 5075 Kietzke Lane to wrap up National Child Passenger Safety Week. The purpose is to place special emphasis on reminding all parents and other adults responsible for children traveling in motor vehicles: if the kids are under 4’9”, they need a booster seat. Additionally, as of June 1, 2004, all children in Nevada up to age 6 and 60 lbs. are required to be in a booster seat. Only 30 cars can be inspected at the checkpoint. Early arrival is recommended. The event will be conducted by Nationally Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians and volunteers. Car accidents are the number one cause of death for children. But children ages 4-8 who use booster seats are 59 percent less likely to be injured in a car crash than children who are restrained only by a safety belt. Seats will be checked to ensure that they are properly installed, are the appropriate seat for the age and weight of the child, and that the seat does not appear on any recall list. More than 90% of cars inspected at the checkpoints arrive with car seats improperly installed. |
