March 6, 2003 -- REMSA (Regional Emergency Medical Services Authority) and SAFE KIDS Washoe County have joined together with Blue Kangaroo Learning Center to provide a Point of Impact child safety seat inspection. SAFE KIDS Washoe County is a non-profit group that is dedicated to protecting children from unintentional injury. This organization works to keep kids safe through unique and hands-on safety events in the community. At the upcoming Point of Impact checkpoint, nationally certified child passenger safety technicians will be available to aid parents with the correct installation of child safety seats. Technicians will make sure that the safety seats are properly installed and are appropriate for the child’s age, height, and weight. Defective seats will be replaced at low to no cost. Parents with children eight years old and younger, who participate in the checkpoint, will have an opportunity to register their child for a Nevada Prepaid Tuition Scholarship, and keep their child safe while traveling on the road to college. The inspection will be held on Saturday, March 8, 2003 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. or until full at the Blue Kangaroo Learning Center, 780 Trademark Dr. in Reno. According to the National SAFE KIDS Campaign, unintentional injury is the number one killer of youths fourteen and younger. SAFE KIDS urges parents to pay attention to their safety seats, as well as those provided by their daycare agency. As a general rule, infants up to one-year-old who weigh up to 20 pounds, should ride in rear-facing safety seats; toddlers over one-year-old who are 20 to 40 pounds, should ride in front-facing child seats; and children up to eight-years-old who weigh more than 40 pounds should ride in a booster seat. Parents will learn about all this and more at REMSA’s upcoming child safety seat inspection. REMSA’s Point of Impact child safety seat inspection and placement program regularly hosts checkpoints where safety seats are inspected for correct installation and usage. Car seats and booster seats found to be unsafe or on a national or manufacturer’s recall list will be removed, destroyed and replaced at reduced costs and/or free of charge to qualifying families. This program is funded in part from the Nevada Office of Traffic Safety. For more information about upcoming checkpoints please call 858-KIDS, or click here. |
