LOWE’S BUILDS SUPPORT IN LUMBER BAY FOR HOST - KRISPY KREME DOUGHNUTS AND REMSA’S CHILD SAFETY SEAT CHECKPOINT

December 10, 2002 - REMSA (Regional Emergency Medical Services Authority) and Krispy Kreme Doughnuts will host a Point of Impact child safety seat inspection and replacement program checkpoint. Trained staff and REMSA volunteers will be inspecting child car seats for correct installation and usage to make sure all children of families in our community leave safely. Parents with children 8 years and under who participate in the car seat checkpoint will have an opportunity to register their child for a Nevada Prepaid Scholarship to any university in the nation.

The checkpoint will be held on Wednesday 11, 2002 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Lowe’s Lumber Bay on the corner of South McCarran and South Kietzke Lane.

According to the National Safe Kids Campaign, car crashes remain the leading cause of death for children. Currently, 98 percent of all children 8 years of age and under are restrained improperly and 33 percent of these children are in the wrong type of restraint. Washoe County has a 98% misuse rate for child safety seats.

Since program inception, REMSA’s Point of Impact trained staff has inspected 5,526 child safety seats, found only 164 seats to be installed properly and has replaced 2,180 seats to parents in need.

REMSA’s Point of Impact child safety seat inspection and replacement program regularly hosts checkpoints where safety seats are inspected for correct installation and usage. Car seats and booster seats found to be unsafe or on a national or manufacturer’s recall list will be removed, destroyed and replaced at reduced costs and/or free of charge to qualifying families. This program is funded in part from the Nevada Office of Traffic Safety.
