June 14, 2002 - Two year old toddler Melanie Reyes will receive a guaranteed four year university prepaid college tuition from corporate sponsor Harrah’s Lake Tahoe and Harrah’s Reno as part of the Nevada Prepaid Tuition program created by the Nevada State Treasurer’s Office. Harrah’s set-up the donation opportunity for all families who participated in either Douglas County Sheriff’s Office or REMSA (Regional Emergency Medical Services Authority) Point of Impact child safety seat checkpoint from January 2001 – February 2002. In October 2001, the toddler’s family participated in a REMSA Point of Impact child safety seat checkpoint, which registered them for the scholarship drawing.

An oversized certificate will be presented to Melanie by State Treasurer Brian Krolicki; Harrah’s Lake Tahoe and Harvey’s General Manager Joe Hasson; and Harrah’s Reno Assistant General Manager, Dave Hurst. Both Eric Guevin, Director of Education for REMSA and Douglas County Sheriff’s Lieutenant, Mike Biaggini will present updates with the child safety seat inspections and comment on the Nevada Prepaid Tuition program.
The presentation will be held at the University of Nevada, Reno, 300 Morrill Hall Alumni Center (front entrance) located at Ninth and Center Street on Friday, June 14, 2002 at 11:00 a.m.

State Treasurer Brian Krolicki established the Nevada Prepaid Tuition program to give Nevada’s families the opportunity to pay future college tuition costs by locking in payments based on today’s prices. Payments never change regardless of future tuition increases and four plans and four payment options are available. As of January 1, 2002, contributions earn interest federal tax-free and earnings are exempt from federal income taxes when used for qualified educational expenses. Both the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and REMSA’s Point of Impact program are challenging other corporations to follow Harrah’s example of generous community involvement. Their goals are to promote child safety seat inspections and saving for college.
