May 3, 2001 -- Every summer, children are rushed to emergency rooms nearly 3 million times for serious injuries resulting from motor vehicle crashes, drownings, bike crashes, pedestrian incidents, falls and other hazards. While parents and children think of summer as the season for fun, emergency room doctors know it as “trauma season.” This year’s National SAFE KIDS Week, May 5-12, highlights summer risks while teaching children, parents and caregivers how to prevent injuries this season.

“Kids are exposed to more dangers during the summer simply because they are more active this time of year,” said Eric Guevin, REMSA’s community education coordinator and director of SAFE KIDS Washoe County. “Kids should have fun without taking a vacation from safety.”

Preventable injuries are the leading killer of children ages 14 and under. More than 2,500 children die each summer due to preventable injuries. These tragedies peak during the summer when children are supervised less, have more free time and engage in more outdoor activities.

As part of summer safety initiative, REMSA and the SAFE KIDS Washoe County coalition has created an informative summer safety checklist that highlights the top injury risks to children during the summer and offers lifesaving information.

WHEEL SAFE   Children should wear a helmet every time they ride a bike, scooter or skate
Kids should know the rules of the road and obey all traffic laws

SWIM SAFE   Children should never swim without an adult present
Always wear a life jacket whenever out on a boat and at the beach or lake

RIDE SAFE   Children should be buckled up on every ride
Children should sit in a back seat whenever possible

WALK SAFE   Pedestrians should look left, right and left again before crossing the street and continue to look both ways while they walk
Children should wear retroflective materials and carry a flashlight when it’s dark

PLAY SAFE   Kids should not use playground equipment unless an adult is present

Children should always wear the right, properly fitted protective gear when they practice and play team sports
