QuickTime plug-in required The Burning Man project has grown from a small group of people gathering spontaneously to a community of over 25,000 people. It began in 1986 in San Francisco and in 1990 had grown so large an event that it moved to the Black Rock Desert just outside of Gerlach, NV. Now every year since, thousands of participants, some of whom travel from all over the world, come to participate in this event. In 1997, REMSA began providing emergency medical support for the event. The following year, in addition to providing emergency medical support, REMSA began oversight of the on-site medical clinic reducing the number of patients per capita needing transport to Reno area hospitals. Since then, in cooperation with the Burning Man organizers, REMSA has pioneered new ways of managing mass gatherings in austere environments and to provide preventive medical advice to participants in the annual event increasing the overall health of the participants. This medical coverage of the Burning Man event has been featured in national medical journals and presented at medical conferences. In essence, REMSA creates an entire EMS system in the middle of the desert. Staffing for the event consists not only of REMSA's Emergency Medical Technicians and Paramedics but also EMS professionals from the rural areas around the Reno-Sparks area. This gives the rural EMS providers an opportunity to gain valuable patient contact experience that enhances emergency medical care in their home communities.
